Information management professional and passionate promoter of BIM for many years. Founding member of the UK IAI (BuildingSmart) in 1996 and former chair of the FM group. IT/BIM advisor on several industry process improvement initiatives that have now become standards.
Led the team that developed the first AutoCAD integrated M&E design and coordination (BSLink) where the drawings were generated from the database. This was extended in 1991 to integrate with an early BIM application which covered architecture and structure (Sonata/Reflex) which effectively evolved into Revit. Co-founder of BIW (then Conject-now Aconex) which was the UK’s first project extranet and is now one of the largest. BIM4FM - Now working with several projects to managing the complete delivery from brief through design, construction and the population of the client CAFM system. Supporting several Health Trusts with Asset Management including strategic service planning, right-sizing the estate, improved utilisation and lifecycle management. Developing true activity-based design and asset management processes, tools and libraries which enable the true value of an asset to be understood and measured. Working with ActivePlan colleagues and BRE to develop the means for manufacturers to create, share and maintain their product information in a manner that supports data/web services and will enable BIM Level 3.

Mervyn has been involved in the development of CAD and BIM systems, software and business processes for over forty years. Mervyn has been instrumental in the successful development and delivery of ICT strategies for many major projects. His achievements include his work on the flagship Heathrow Terminal 5 project, where he was a 3D modelling consultant for more than eight years. Mervyn was with Laing/Laing O’Rourke, from 1972 until 2004, latterly as Information Systems Manager for the Laing Group of companies. He is the director and principal consultant for MR1 Consulting. He was awarded an OBE for services to BIM and to the Construction Industry in 2013. He is a visiting Professor at University Reading. Also visiting lecturer at three major London Universities. He is also co-owner of the Avanti Partnership delivering education and training programs leading to BIM Certification with the Building Research Establishment at Watford UK. Mervyn worked on T5A/B/C from inception to completion spending 12 years on a ground breaking design management process BIM. It introduced SME (single model environment), CDE (common data environment) and 3D clash detection using Navisworks. It was a true multi tram coordination project at a value of £4.3 Billion. This was one of the world’s first integrated BIM projects. Mervyn is the co author of the BIM Maturity Diagram (Bew and Richards) and the current requirement to deliver BIM to Level 2. He has also undertaken the same role across the programme of works for Crossrail, the new, high-frequency, high-capacity, railway for London and the South East. He sits on the Construction Project Information Committee (CPIC), the industry group, and has authored or co-authored two CPIC guides, one on Production Information and one on Building Information Management. Member of the BSI B555 Committee and author of BS1192:2007 and PAS1192-2 and in currently the author of the updates to the PAS 1192:2 and sits on the steering group for the development of the Standards as an ISO.as an ISO.

Ivor Barbrook is an expert in the UK in digital construction (BIM), design delivery and planning. He has worked with the supply chain and engineering design consultants to establish and implement strong design / contractor interface management procedures used as a management tool on design and construct projects. In partnership with Autodesk, the supply chain and employers, Ivor has put in place BIM work flows for civil engineering infrastructure within BAM Nuttall. This has enhanced the delivered construction product value and quality, providing benefit to all parties. After graduating from the University of Nottingham with a degree in Architecture her focus and passion shifted to software. In her role, she takes her in-depth knowledge of software and its interoperability, and combines this with her understanding of industry standards and the theory behind them. A former Revit Gunslinger she is co-author of the book “Delivering COBie Using Revit” and has worked on the world’s first IPI project. She is also the Attract and Promote Lead for Women In BIM. Her push is to now use her experience and knowledge to make projects more efficient, joining up the dots between technology, process and people to enable true collaboration with an emphasis on OpenBIM principles.

Chartered Architectural Technologist Dan Rossiter MCIAT has been actively supporting the construction industry at the Welsh, UK, and international level for several years.
Within Wales, Dan is a G4C Wales committee member, chair of Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists’ Wales Region, and is supporting BIM adoption as a BIM Regions. Within the UK, Dan delivers a myriad of BIM services for BRE (www.bre.co.uk/BIM), focussing on education and also contributes to education and engagement work done by the UK BIM Alliance. Internationally, Dan contributes to buildingSMART international working groups, and participates in European research projects.
Dan is also heavily involved in Standards development as a member of the BSI standards committee for Construction design, modelling and data exchange. Dan is also the CEN and ISO convenor for terminology around construction information, and has also co-authored the free-to-use BRE BIM Terminology tool.

Abi Owolabi is a Solutions Architect and Software Developer at ActivePlan Consulting Ltd, a BIM solutions provider with software products to facilitate BIM delivery from design to assets management. Abi has 25 years’ experience in developing engineering software solutions with more than 15 years of those in Construction applications. He is a Chartered IT Professional with British Computer Society and holds an Engineering Doctorate in Innovative Construction Engineering from Loughborough University as well as an MSc in Advanced Computer Systems from Edinburgh University.
Over his career, Abi worked with BIW Technologies, providing collaboration technologies to construction industries before moving on to Tata Steel R&D as a Principal Researcher. At Tata Steel, played a leading role on many construction IT project including the designs, sales and logistics software for the EU 6th Framework – ManuBuild (Open Building Manufacturing). Before moving on to ActivePlan in 2015, Abi was the Technology Lead for Tata Steel BIM, working in collaborative with Tata Steel Marketing. In ActivePlan, Abi continues to apply his expertise and knowledge of IT, product supply chain and construction processes towards providing end-to-end, bespoke and innovative BIM solutions, especially for the UK construction industry transformation projects.

Jonathan Hewitt is an Associate BIM Consultant at the BRE and a Computer Science graduate from the University of Hertfordshire, Jonathan has over 15 years’ experience in the Construction Industry predominately working for major tier 1 contracts in the UK and MENA and recently with clients such as HS2.
A Commercial Manager with a specialist in the NEC Suite of Contracts, Jonathan was part of the Senior Commercial Management Team to deliver the first NEC contract in the UAE on the Al Raha Beach Development, Abu Dhabi.
Away from the Middle East and Building Projects Jonathan is experienced in managing large Multi-Discipline Rail projects in the UK on Network Rail and Transport for London projects.
Before joining the BRE’s BIM Team Jonathan held a role responsible for BIM Implementation across the Commercial and Procurement job families of a Major Tier 1 Contractor. The role saw him develop a strategy and implementation programme which covered People, Process and Systems development to provide the Commercial and Procurement Job Family with the skills and tools to be BIM Level 2 compliant.
Jonathan currently sits on the RICS Tech Focus Working Group as well as giving lectures at Universities on the impact of BIM on the Quantity Surveyor.

Paul Oakley is a chartered Architect and a world leading expert in BIM. He heads the BIM Division in BRE where he is responsible for the technical delivery of the BRE Academy BIM training, the BIM certification schemes delivered under the BRE Certification mark and BIM research projects. Paul sits on the Board of BuildingSMART UK & Ireland and represents the bSIUKI on the International Standards Committee. Paul has over 30 years’ industry experience and prior to joining the BRE specialised in the delivery of large Residential projects using the principles of Avanti embodied in BS1192:2007. Paul ran his own CAD/BIM Consultancy for over 10 years and has also driven change through several large Architectural practices by implementing BS1192:2007 and more recently PAS 1192-2:2013 as Project Team Leader, Group CAD Manager and Consultant. Paul has been involved in many industry CAD / BIM initiatives from Teamwork 2000, Avanti, ADT Community group and the BIM Community as well as representing the RIBA on the CIC BIM Forum. Originally training as a surveyor, he has spent over thirty years working on major construction projects. In 2011, Tony resigned as a director of AECOM to pursue an interest in leadership development and coaching project teams. Don Ward is Chief Executive of Constructing Excellence, the UK industry best practice and knowledge transfer organisation which is part of the BRE Trust group of companies. He also runs the European Construction Institute (ECI), which became part of BRE in September 2017 and has responsibility for BRE’s Innovation Parks.
Don has over thirty years’ experience of best practice in the built environment sector, specialising in policy making, industry change, supply chain integration, collaborative working and sustainability in housing, buildings and infrastructure. He was previously chief executive of the Design Building Foundation and the Construction Industry Board after an early career as a buildings physicist.

Dr Ilka May is a senior consultant for BIM, GIS and digitalisation in the construction sector with more than fifteen years’ experience working with spatial technology and data. In her 10 years working for Ove Arup International, Ilka has worked with major clients on a range of prestigious projects, including London Olympics, Crossrail, Network Rail and Deutsche Bahn. In 2015 Ilka was the lead author of a national strategic BIM road map for Germany and was appointed as co-chair of the EU BIM Task Group in Brussels. Elizabeth started the HR team 14 years ago and has built the culture of the practice as an employer with 83% of the team are engaged or highly engaged (compared to the national average of 38%) and the first firm in the UK to hold all 8 areas of the Workplace Wellbeing Charter.
Elizabeth is cultural lead for the Digital Built Britain program with a particular focus on the culture of collaboration. She founded the group Behaviours4Collaboration focussed on the development of a culture of collaboration in construction. The group have developed a tool called the Collaborative Behavioural Map which describes behaviourally how to collaborate and this is being developed as British Standard to sit alongside ISO44001.
