Overview
BIM has already saved the UK construction industry and its clients over £2bn. Digital technology is evolving and therefore changing the way that we plan our infrastructure, construct buildings and maintain it all. The Digital Construction Summit will deliver case studies on successful digital projects, thought leadership on the adoption of BIM, discussion around the ways in which embracing the latest technology will improve efficiency, as well as safety, health and wellbeing.
Topics include:
- Case studies and best practice
- The benefits to the whole supply chain
- How digitalisation can assist with modern methods of construction
- Building in more efficient ways
- The impacts technology will have on the Future of Construction
- Changes to culture of working
- How data can benefit client, contractor and supply chain
- Protection from cyber threats
- Value of BIM and Digital Tech
- How to reskill your work force in BIM
- Where to go for more information and resources

Producing coordinated project information in a digital world
To date, the main focus of building information modelling (BIM) has been around more efficient drawing generation and clash detection. In this presentation Stephen will focus on the information within BIM and demonstrate how construction professionals and their clients can benefit from this.
Key learning outcomes:
- How to have a standardised approach to construction project information
- How to coordinate information in a collaborative environment
- How BIM and emerging digital technologies will disrupt the construction industry

Digitising offsite construction
This key-note presentation looks at the latest techniques for digitising construction and how the new technology is taking offsite construction to the next level.
Digital transformation is happening all around us and the developing technologies, such as global connectivity, and new advances such as drones, satellite images, robotics and electric cars are set to accelerate and will continue to change the way we live. The construction industry has been much slower to adopt and benefit from the digital transformation. McAvoy’s view is that there is tremendous synergy between offsite construction with its speed and quality benefits - and the latest digital techniques, which can radically improve the way we design and produce new buildings.

HS2’s approach to BIM and Beyond
BIM processes requires design and handover of information to be consistently produced, managed and exchanged, to an agreed set of collaborative and integrated processes that encourage the re-use of data. This is a step towards a more digital and data-centric process which requires a set of connected, integrated and fully governed information systems. HS2 is committed to the use of BIM to deliver a high speed, integrated and operating railway. We are harnessing the power of BIM to enable our whole life approach to managing our digital assets and realising their value. This approach will enable us to create and maintain a digital representation of the railway, joining up all necessary data, creating a cohesive Information Model, which can be visualised and interrogated for different purposes using cutting edge technology. The Information Model will be created progressively throughout the lifecycle of the railway; ‘Virtual Railway’ during Design and Construction with a view to handover a ‘Digital Twin’ of the built asset to Operations & Maintenance.
Dr. Sonia Zahiroddiny, BIM Strategy Manager, HS2 Ltd

Transforming construction
Sam will talk about the Transforming Construction programme that he is leading on behalf of BEIS and UKRI which is part of the delivery of the UK Industrial Strategy. The Transforming Construction challenge, a £170 million research and innovation investment, matched by £250 million from industry, will create new construction processes and techniques for building manufacture in the UK. Linked to the Construction Sector Deal, the programme includes funding for research, a new construction network and the creation of an active building centre and innovation hub.

Digital quality management in construction
With basic quality management in construction fundamentally the same as in 1980’s and some quality control processes dating back to 1960’s, new technologies are a game changer that require new skills and thought processes. With the mountains of data being generated, quality professionals need to unlock its value to drive the quality of construction in 21st century. Digital Quality Management uses lean construction to leverage digital technology of BIM, AR, VR, Drones, blockchains, robotics, 3D printing, advanced materials, laser scanning and AI and place quality management at the heart of digital construction. Out goes traditional document-centric management systems and in comes web-based process management, BIM models, digital instructions through smart glasses, workflow systems and knowledge management systems.

How does data add value?
Every year we spend £100bn on new assets in the UK and millions of pounds are spent trying to make savings on how we construct assets more cheaply but however much we try and save, the impact on the entire UK estate and the efficiency of the services needed to be provided to citizens is minimal. How do we focus on understanding how our assets are really used and how do we make the assets we do constrict every year provide better, more effective outcomes?
Part of the answer is of course better data, but just as importantly, what data? And how is it used and presented to users in structures and formats that can be understood and used?
